The Mound
by H. P. Lovecraft
The Mound (1940, written 1929–30) is Lovecraft’s longest collaboration, written for Zealia Bishop. An investigator in Oklahoma discovers that a mysterious mound is the entrance to K’n-yan, a vast subterranean civilization of immortal beings who have existed beneath the earth since before humanity. As he reads a 16th-century Spanish manuscript found near the mound, the history of this underground world unfolds—from its heights of psychic power to its descent into decadence and cruelty. "It is only within the last few years that most people have stopped thinking of the West as a new land."
