Plot Summary
After being separated from Edward during the riot on London Bridge, Miles Hendon loses his last farthing to pickpockets but resolves to find the boy he believes to be a delusional orphan. He devises a methodical search strategy, reasoning that Edward will be found at the center of some crowd, proclaiming himself King. Miles spends all night and into the next day tramping through London's poorest districts, following the coronation procession to Westminster Abbey, but never finds his young companion. Exhausted and penniless, he falls asleep in the countryside and wakes the following morning, deciding to seek out Sir Humphrey Marlow at the palace for financial help.
At the palace, Miles encounters the whipping-boy, who recognizes him from Edward's description and agrees to carry his name inside. Before word can return, Miles is arrested as a suspicious character. The officers discover the document Edward wrote at Hendon Hallโan extravagant decree naming Miles an earlโand Miles believes he will surely hang for this apparent forgery. Instead, the officer returns with orders to release Miles and escort him, with great ceremony, through the palace and into the royal presence chamber.
There, Miles is astonished to discover that his "little lunatic" is actually the true King of England, seated under a canopy of state. When Edward publicly declares Miles a knight, then an Earl of Kent with lands and gold, and grants him and his descendants the hereditary right to sit in the King's presence, Miles can scarcely believe his fortune has reversed so completely. Edward also orders Sir Hugh Hendon stripped of his stolen estates and imprisoned. Finally, Tom Canty enters, and Edward praises his gentle rule, appoints him chief governor of Christ's Hospital for life, and bestows upon him the honorary title "the King's Ward," with a distinctive dress of state that commands public reverence.
