Plot Summary
O'Brien escorts Winston down a corridor in the Ministry of Love to the room Winston has always known awaited him: Room 101. When Winston asks what lies inside, O'Brien delivers his chilling answer: "The worst thing in the world." He explains that Room 101 contains something different for every prisoner — it holds whatever each person fears most. For some it is burial alive, for others drowning or fire or impalement. For Winston Smith, the worst thing in the world is rats.
Guards bring in an oblong wire cage divided into two compartments, with a fencing-mask-like attachment on one end designed to fit over a human face. Inside the cage are two enormous, starving brown rats. O'Brien explains the mechanism: when a lever is pressed, a door between the compartments slides up and the rats will leap at the nearest source of food — Winston's face. They will bore through his cheeks, burrow into his tongue, and devour him alive. O'Brien moves the cage closer.
Winston is strapped into a chair, completely immobilized, unable to move even his head. As the cage is positioned against his face, separated only by the wire mesh, Winston can smell the rats and see their savage, intent eyes. In a moment of absolute, primal terror — a terror that goes beyond thought or strategy — Winston screams the words that destroy him: "Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don't care what you do to her.
