Plot Summary

Winston rents the room above Mr. Charrington's junk shop in the prole district, fully aware that this decision will eventually lead to his arrest and death. Despite this grim certainty, he proceeds — the room offers something irresistible: a space seemingly free from surveillance, with no telescreen. He and Julia begin meeting there regularly, transforming the dusty room into a private domestic haven.

Julia arrives carrying luxuries pilfered through her Inner Party connections on the black market — real coffee, white sugar, proper bread, jam, and genuine tea. She also applies makeup and perfume, both forbidden indulgences. For a brief time, the couple experiences something resembling ordinary life: sharing food, making love, and sleeping together in a real bed with clean sheets. When they wake, Julia discovers a rat poking through a hole in the baseboard. Winston's visceral terror at the sight reveals his deepest phobia — a fear that will prove fatally significant later. Julia calmly promises to block the hole.

Winston begins reciting the nursery rhyme Mr. Charrington taught him — "Oranges and lemons, say the bells of St. Clement's" — and Julia surprises him by knowing most of the remaining verses, having learned them from her grandfather. The chapter closes with Winston gazing into the glass paperweight he purchased from the shop, imagining himself and Julia suspended inside it like the coral at its center, preserved in a private world outside the reach of time and the Party.

Winston displays a fatalistic acceptance that deepens his character considerably. He knows the room is a trap — he even acknowledges that renting it is "the kind of thing that got you killed" — yet he chooses the present moment over self-preservation. Julia reveals a more practical, sensual personality. Foreshadowing: Winston's extreme fear of rats plants a seed that will bloom horrifically in Room 101.
