Herman Melville wrote, Omoo: A Narrative of Adventures in the South Seas, in 1846 and it was published in 1847. The novel is autobiograhical in nature, based on his experiences sailing on the Australian whaler Lucy Ann, but it might be more accurately described as based upon personal experience and various sources, then heavily embellished throughout.
