Soldiers of Fortune

Soldiers of Fortune (1897) is Richard Harding Davis's most famous novel. Set in the fictional South American republic of Olancho, it follows Robert Clay, a bold American mining engineer who must navigate political intrigue, a brewing revolution, and matters of the heart when he falls for Alice Langham, the daughter of the mining company's owner.

Drawing on Davis's own experiences as a globe-trotting journalist, the novel captures the spirit of American adventure and ambition at the dawn of the twentieth century. It was one of the best-selling novels of its era and was later adapted for both stage and screen.
